SMITHFIELD- Mary Bonney Wilson Miller, went home to be with the Lord on April 14, 2007 after a period of declining health. She was born January 11, 1926 in Smithfield, NC to Dr. W. G. Wilson, Jr. of Wilson's Mills and Annie Lowrie Bonney of Philadelphia, PA. She attended public schools in Smithfield and graduated from Smithfield High School. She graduated from Atlantic Christian College and finished graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill. Mary worked for a time with the U. S. Foreign Service outside the continental US. She also worked as a civil servant for state governments in Colorado and NC. Following her retirement in the early 1980's from NC State Government she returned to make her home in Smithfield, NC with her mother in the family homeplace on Bridge Street. Later she and her mother were to remodel a smaller, vintage home on North Third Street. She loved to travel and in her youth and midlife she traveled to many parts of the world exploring other cultures. She was an avid reader and interested in many subjects including history, politics, religion, family and friends. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Smithfield. In her later years she was a loyal member of the Amen Corner at McDonald's in Smithfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, W. G. "Bill" Wilson, III and his wife Jenny of Wilson's Mills.She is survived by nieces, Bonney Boyette and husband Rob and Sandra Carter and husband Walter, all of Swansboro, and nephew Gilliam Wilson of Wilson's Mills. She also leaves many devoted friends. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. The family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 7 at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 S. Third St., Smithfield, NC 27577.Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield.Arrangements are being handled by Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield.
