Carl Person Worley, Jr., 83, of Selma, long-time civic and business leader, died peacefully on March 22, 2009, following a brief illness. Born on January 6, 1926, Carl was the older of two children born to the late Carl P. Worley and Grace Williams Worley. A graduate of Selma High School, Carl attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill but left school to join the Navy, in which he served with distinction during World War II. After the war, he returned to Chapel Hill and completed his degree in business and science. In 1946 he joined the family business, Worley's Beverages, bottler of Pepsi-Cola, Worley's Root Beer and other soft drinks, where he proved to be a visionary. In the years after joining the firm, Carl led it through a complete modernization program and expanded the business into several counties. Carl also recognized that there was not then a dependable source for canned Pepsi-Cola products, so he led the planning process to build Carolina Canners, Inc., the first Carolina-based Pepsi-Cola cannery. He was named president of the North Carolina Soft Drink Association and President of the National Pepsi-Cola Bottlers Association. Carl was a founder and major benefactor of Day By Day Treatment Center of Selma, an adult residential facility that offers an intensive program of drug and alcohol addiction recovery and treatment. He served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors for several years. A life-long lover of music, Carl was an expert in jazz. He was a patron sponsor of the North Carolina Jazz Festival for several years. He was also an avid Carolina fan and could regularly be seen cheering on his beloved Tar Heels in Kenan Stadium and the Dean Dome. Carl is survived by his wife, Mary "Winkie" Earp Worley, his son, Carl P. Worley, III, of Garner, his daughter, DeeJay Worley, of Lake Gaston, step-son, Richard E. Moore of Raleigh, his sister, Iris W. Taylor of Wilmington, and grandchildren Wes Stewart, Paul Worley and Sarah Worley. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ellen W. Stewart and his son, Joshua Paul Worley. The family will receive visitors at home at 7020 NC Hwy. 42 East, Selma. Funeral services will be held at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma on Tuesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Day By Day Treatment Center, 1101 River Rd., Selma, NC 27576.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.parrishfh.com.
