Ruby Batten Griffin, age 90, went to her heavenly home on August 12, 2010 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC.Born June 29, 1920, she was the only child of Arthur and Chellie Batten and her step-mother, Tempie Batten. She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband, Linwood Griffin, for nearly sixty years. Since birth, she served the Lord faithfully as the fourth generation of Battens at Pleasant Plain FWB Church. The church was built by her great grandfather and grandfather in 1887. Over her lifetime at her church, she served as Director of the League, Director of Vacation Bible School, President of the Women's Auxiliary from which she was honored with a lifetime membership in 2005, a member of the Adult Choir, Sunday School teacher, and Chair of many committees. She was a devoted homemaker, an employee of Smith's Store in Selma, a houseparent at The Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC, and a houseparent for a Group Home in Smithfield, NC. She was a positive influence on many lives, not only in her church and family but in her community. Survivors include two daughters, Sue Griffin of Cary, NC and Dianne Griffin Parker and husband Jack of Vass, NC; three granddaughters, Wynn T. Bettinsoli and husband Gino of Raleigh, NC, Amy T. Pitt and husband Joe of Charlotte, NC, Robin C. Stanton and husband Rod of Holly Springs, NC; seven great-grandchildren, Celia, Tess and Dean Bettinsoli, Griffin and Josie Pitt, and Brezny and Brooke Stanton.She was predeceased in death by her mother, Chellie Batten, her father and step-mother, Arthur and Tempie Batten, her husband, Linwood S. Griffin, and a grandson, Chris Creech.A celebration of her life will be held at Pleasant Plain FWB Church on Sunday, August 15 at 2:00 followed by a Committal Service at Selma Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 at the church, and lunch will be served to all friends in the Fellowship Hall during this time.
