Lucille Johnson Coates, 92, passed away at her home on July 1, 2014, surrounded by family. Her most beloved occupation was being a homemaker for her family. She took great pride and joy in cooking, sewing and the home arts. In addition, she was a teacher in Johnston County's Headstart program for several years and worked at a number of fabric stores in Johnston County. As a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Smithfield, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. As a member of the Woman's Auxiliary she received the Dola Dudley Award and the Auxiliary Life Award. Mrs. Coates was a devoted sister, mother and wife. She was preceeded in death by her husband, the Reverend Albert T. Coates; her son, the Reverend Donald A. Coates; her brother, Raeford Johnson; and her sister, Grace Northern. She is survived by her children Bonnie Glass (John), Danny Coates, Janet Clark (Randy), and daughter-in-law Suzanne Coates.
