Smithfield -William Edward Stephenson died January 14, 2021 in the comfort of his own home.
Edward is survived by his daughter, Kellie (Greg) Smith of Raleigh, NC; son, Will (Katie) Stephenson of Smithfield, NC; brother, Woody (Deborah) Stephenson of Waycross, GA; sister, Dora Morgan of Wilmington, NC; brother, Tim Stephenson of Smithfield, NC; and the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Kinslie Faye Smith, William Gibson Smith and Thomas Reid Stephenson.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Faye Stewart Stephenson; father, Albert Ray Stephenson and mother, Carrie Victoria Stephenson.
Edward was born April 17, 1952 to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ray Stephenson. He attended Smithfield Selma High School and later Louisburg College and North Carolina State University. After college, he proceeded to further his career and passion in the family business as a tobacco auctioneer. Edward was revered by many as one of the best auctioneers of his era.
He spent many years traveling with the tobacco market, leading him to meet the love his life, Faye, who he wed July 26, 1982. Edward continued his passion for the tobacco industry by building his own business, with Faye by his side.
In addition to the tobacco market, Edward formed Stephenson Stump and Tree Service, which led to him being renowned by many as "The Tree Man". He later retired from his business endeavors and spent his final years with his wife enjoying his children and grandchildren.
The family will hold a graveside memorial service on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 2:00pm at Hills of The Neuse Memory Garden in Smithfield and will receive friends after the graveside service.
In light of current COVID-19 concerns, the family respectfully requests that you honor social distancing and safety policies during the service and visit.
