Sue Hines Johnson was born on December 12, 1942, in Selma, NC, to her parents, John and Lillian Hines, and her older brother, Fredrick (Fred) Hines.

She grew up in her preteen years in Norfolk, VA. Then her family relocated back to Selma, NC during her junior high and senior high school years, when she met and started dating her future husband, Golden Johnson, Jr. of Smithfield, NC. They married with the blessing of her father, upon the condition that she be allowed to graduate from high school. She was a graduate of Smithfield High School, class of 1961. Her son and only child, Johnny G. Johnson, was born the following December 8, 1962, just four days prior to her 20th birthday.

She worked most of her adult life as a professional secretary for Fieldcrest Mills Inc. of Smithfield, NC, until her retirement in 1980. After retirement, she became a full-time student at Johnston Community College, and later East Carolina University, earning her degree in Psychology and Mental Health Sciences.

Her husband passed away in 1990, and she went back into the secretarial occupation and worked for the law office of James and Alan Wellons in Smithfield, NC for several years.

At the conclusion of her working years, she relished her freedom to enjoy her grandchildren, gardening, church activities, travel, and local social life. She was always known for her sweet and friendly personality, her beautiful blue eyes and striking good looks, ladylike grace, and unselfish generosity to her family and close friends.

She was a model daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and loyal and proud United States citizen.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park.

Sue is survived by her son, Johnny G. Johnson and wife Terry F. Johnson of Selma; grandchildren, Tyler G. Johnson and Dustin G. Thompson and wife Meredith; great-grandchildren, Asher G. Johnson, Holden L. Johnson, Lilly-Anna Thompson, and Maverick F. Thompson.
