Stephen Ray Dean, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Willow Creek Nursing and Rehab Center in Goldsboro. Born November 25, 1947, in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Julian Dean and Helen Privette Dean.

Stephen was a dedicated businessman, community servant, and loving father whose life was defined by his commitment to his family and the community he called home. Throughout his career, Stephen worked as a sales representative for Southern States Petroleum. He was also the proud owner of Chubby's laundromat, where he became a familiar and valued part of the community. Stephen could talk to the wall and didn't know a stranger. He was bigger than life and always was laughing about something.

Stephen believed in giving back to Selma. He served on the Selma Town Council and volunteered with the Selma Fire Department, dedicating his time to helping and protecting others. He was also a member of the Selma Jaycee's. further demonstrating his commitment to making his community a better place. Above all, Stephen was a loving father. His family was at the heart of his life, and he will be remembered for the love, care, and devotion he gave to those closest to him.

A celebration of life will take place in November. Details will be added at that time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Mental Health America (MHA) at www.mhanational.org.

Stephen is survived by his daughters, Alison Dean (Phillip Creech) and Stephanie Wellons (Wiley); grandson, Gabriel Prickett; brother, Jerry Dean; sister, Sandra Peedin (Jim); niece, Laura Moushey; and nephew, Timothy Dean.

Stephen leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
