Smithfield- Rufus Earl Benson, age 77, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, in Smithfield Manor Nursing & Rehab. Born, July 11, 1945, In Johnston County he was a son of the late Cleveland Thomas Benson and Virginia Pope Benson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Benson, son, Craig Baker; brothers, William Dallas Benson and Thomas Ray Benson. Rufus was a hard-working man. He worked as a driver for Guy C. Lee Company for many years until his health failed. Rufus loved to rebuild motors and work on all kinds of machinery. He also enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. He was a character and brought joy to those around him. Rufus will be missed by all his friends and family.

He is survived by his son, Greg Baker, brother, J.C. Benson of Whiteville, sister, Florence Pittman of Smithfield, several nieces and nephews as well as his grandchildren.
