Mary Ellen
Ranes
October 29, 1948 – July 14, 2025
Mary Ellen Pierce Ranes, 76, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, surrounded by love at her home.
Born October 29, 1948, in Skippers, Virginia, Ellen was the beloved daughter of the late Lenward Earl and Mary Alice Pierce. One of a large, close-knit family, she was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters — a legacy of strength, laughter, and shared memories.
Ellen was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Selma, where her quiet strength and warm spirit were felt by many. A true Southern matriarch, Ellen found joy in the simple pleasures: the stillness of the mountains, the sparkle of the lake, and a bustling kitchen filled with the aroma of something delicious made with love. Her cooking wasn't just food — it was comfort, tradition, and an invitation to gather.
Ellen is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Ray Ranes, her steady partner through life's joys and challenges. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter. She also leaves behind her son, David Ranes and wife Misty; her daughter, Jenny Wright and husband Mike; and her cherished grandchildren: Autumn Park and husband DJ, Jared Ranes, and Emma Ranes. Her light will shine on through her great-granddaughter, Presley Park, and her loving sisters, Mildred Harris and husband Harvey, and Virginia Dickerson.
Ellen's legacy is one of faith, family, and fierce love. Her absence leaves a hole in the hearts of many, but her spirit will live on in every family recipe passed down, every lake day, and every mountain breeze.
A funeral service to celebrate Ellen's life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at 505 Double W Farm Lane, Selma, NC. Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family in honoring a life beautifully lived.
