Maria Kelly Mickow, age 80, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at SECU Hospice House surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Born on October 7, 1945, in Holland, Maria moved to the United States with her family in 1947 and made North Carolina her lifelong home.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Elisabeth Hanssen Kelly and Emery Joseph Kelly, and by her beloved daughter, Irma “Jeannie” Thorpe.

She is survived by her life partner, Tom Saunders; her devoted family Chris Stallings; her grandsons, Christopher Thorpe (Angela) of Pine Level and Brandon Thorpe (Kelly) of Aberdeen, North Carolina; two great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; her sister, Betty Alligood (Nolan) of Washington, North Carolina; her niece, Tammy Mizelle (David), and great-nephew, also of Washington, North Carolina. She is also survived by her maternal aunt, Muthie Dreesen-Hanssen of Holland, along with many cherished cousins.

Maria attended Selma High School and attended Johnston Technical Institute. She devoted much of her working life to JCI, where she compassionately served and supported adults with special needs. Her kindness, patience, and caring spirit touched many lives throughout her years of service.

Maria loved horses, being outdoors with her family, and spending time watching a great movie with her grandchildren. These simple joys reflected her deep love for family and the moments they shared together.

She will be remembered for her warm heart, caring nature, and the love she shared so freely with those around her. Her memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
