Lucille Johnson Coates, 92, passed away at her home on July 1, 2014, surrounded by family. Her most beloved occupation was being a homemaker for her family. She took great pride and joy in cooking, sewing and the home arts. In addition, she was a teacher in Johnston County's Headstart program for several years and worked at a number of fabric stores in Johnston County. As a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Smithfield, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. As a member of the Woman's Auxiliary she received the Dola Dudley Award and the Auxiliary Life Award. Mrs. Coates was a devoted sister, mother and wife. She was preceeded in death by her husband, the Reverend Albert T. Coates; her son, the Reverend Donald A. Coates; her brother, Raeford Johnson; and her sister, Grace Northern. She is survived by her children Bonnie Glass (John), Danny Coates, Janet Clark (Randy), and daughter-in-law Suzanne Coates. Her nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren called her "Gammy."The family would like to thank those who provided such loving and compassionate care for her including the staff at Wil/Med Hospital in Wilson, NC; Dr. Hal Woodall, Vickie, Regina, and staff at Kenly Medical Associates; and her home care-givers Lola, Sheryl, Debbie, Kirstie, Austin and others.SERVICE INFORMATIONJuly 4 at First Free Will Baptist Church, Smithfield, 529 South 3rd Street, Smithfield with the Reverend Sam Weeks and the Reverend Howard Scott officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, Memorial Service at 11:00 amGraveside Service (Sunset Memorial Park, corner of Hwy 70 and Hwy 210, Smithfield)
