Smithfield – James Melvin Braswell died on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Johnston County on December 23, 1942, to the late Braxton and Myrtle Braswell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Harold Eugene Braswell. James served as a deacon at North Smithfield Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James enjoyed watching the birds and cutting his grass. He was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, chapter B out of Goldsboro, NC for 9 years.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 21, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at North Smithfield Baptist Church with Bill Worley officiating. Kevin Hartley and Ed Price will also be speaking during the service.

James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Brenda Waldon Braswell; daughters, Lori Narron (Mike) of Emerald Isle and Annette Jernigan of Smithfield; grandchildren, Maegan Myers (Steven Stewart), James Jernigan (Taylor), Anthony Jernigan, Courtney Hayes (Jackson), Brianna Myers, Kirsten Myers; great-grandchildren, Gunner, Sadie, Marleigh, Delaney, Rylee, and Jax.
