India Sutherland Higgins, wife of Danny Ray Higgins and daughter of Mahlon and Joanne Sutherland, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in Smithfield, NC. Born on December 29, 1954, India attended Appalachian State University before dedicating her life to helping others. She spent 30 years as a speech pathologist in Smithfield, NC, followed by 9 years serving the Head Start program, leaving a lasting impact on countless children and families in the community.

India was a true red-headed spitfire – warm, welcoming, and brilliantly witty. She had a rare gift for making friends with whomever she met, and anyone who knew her was truly blessed.

A woman of vibrant passions, India was an avid cook who loved drawing inspiration from the Pioneer Woman and was famously known for adding a kick of chili peppers to her dishes. Her home was a reflection of her joyful spirit. She loved Snoopy and the Peanuts characters, and Christmas was her absolute favorite holiday, during which her house was beautifully filled with many types of Santas. Upon moving to Smithfield, her love for community and dance shined as she became part of the team that introduced and started the local Shag Club.

India had a deep love for the Lord and inspired many people by sending scripture daily to them as an encouragement as well as sent cards and letters to let others know of God’s love. She cared for others by showing love in many ways, and her warmth and fiery spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A floating memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at her home, located at 940 Yelverton Grove Road in Smithfield. Family and friends are invited to stop by at any time during those hours to share memories and celebrate her life.
