Esther Mae Lewis Carter, age 92, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at UNC Johnston Health in Clayton. Born in Johnston County on November 24, 1930, she was a daughter to the late Lorenzo Lewis and Sarah Boykin Lewis.

Esther fought a long courageous battle with lung cancer along with other health issues. She loved everyone and would do and give with her unselfish heart. Her greatest love was her love for Jesus Christ.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 in Selma Memorial Gardens.

In addition to her parents, Esther is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Ray Carter, 7 siblings, Vernon Lewis, Eldridge Lewis, Ella Boyette, Elma Flowers, Zelma Paul, Ardella Wall, and Iva Johnson.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Peggy Pittman of Pine Level; son, Ronald Keith Carter and wife Trudy of Wilson's Mills; grandchildren, Shannon P. Kirby and husband Maxie of Kenly; Michael Keith Carter and wife Valerie of Raleigh; great grandchildren, Bailey Lail and wife Morgan of Sims; and Kaitlyn Cobb of Pine Level. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and a special family, the Bissette family, and special friend, her little 4-legged fur baby Sassy.
