Durwood Stephen “Steve” Oliver passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 16, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. “Steve” was a son of the late Glenn Durwood Oliver and Gracie Jones Oliver and was born in Johnston County on April 24, 1955. In addition to his father and mother, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Robin Carrol Oliver; sister, Beverly Turnage; nephew, Tony Turnage; grandson, Zackery Oliver, and his most favorite cutting horse, “Rattler”.

The family will receive visitors at Parrish Funeral Home on Saturday October 24, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A memorial service will follow the visitation on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Often, he was called “Big Steve”, most likely due to his presence and personality that won every room. For a long time, “Big Steve” ran construction sites by day, if he wasn’t running deer, dogs, and hunting, that is. Lord knows he loved to hunt, fish, and ride horses as he was an avid outdoorsman, sportsman and cowboy for sure!

From riding in his old blue Chevy truck, “Mad dog”, to driving a set of mules in his self- custom- made buggies, especially with his favorite pair of white males, Grady and Opossum right on into the night life of fast cars, dancing, good alcohol, and pretty women. You might as well say he was one heck of a character and enjoyed everything life had to offer.

“Big Steve” loved entering the Mule Days Oldest and Ugliest Mule contests. Steve won that contest more than anyone ever in Mule Days history. He was also the first person to be grandfathered in to do historic carriage rides in Georgetown, S.C. after he formed Water’s Edge Carriage Company. He would tell you a joke and a lie in a heartbeat. He just had a knack for that.

Steve’s smile, his laugh, and his sense of humor drew everyone to him, and it will forever live on in our hearts. Steve is survived by his daughters, Barbara Denise Oliver, Danielle Oliver Taylor and husband Joseph; son, Stephen Chase Oliver and fiancé’, Julia Oden;, Step-daughter, Angela Fish; brother, Tracy Oliver; grandchildren, Tara Newton, Jadyn Page, Jenna Oliver, Chris Oliver, Jet Taylor, Ryles Taylor, Everette Taylor, Emerson Taylor, Cody Williams and Fisher Potter; long-time friend, former wife and caregiver, Gail Oliver.

The family wishes to thank you all for your love and support during this time of grief.
