Smithfield—Douglas Wade Shirley, 84, passed away on Sunday June 9, 2024 at The Landings of Smithfield. Born in Johnston County on December 13, 1939, he was the son of the late T.W. "Red" Shirley and Hazel Warren Shirley. Mr. Shirley was known as a self-employed jack of all trades, and he worked at the Department of Corrections for several years. He was also a veteran, serving in the Army National Guard.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday at Oakland Cemetery on North Street in Smithfield.  Pastor Kristin Tucker will officiate.

Surviving are: sons, Keenan Shirley and wife Deborah of Garner; Samuel Shirley of Smithfield; sister, Tina Hobbs and husband Joey of Smithfield; two grandchildren, Carson Shirley of Garner, Thomas Shirley of Smithfield.

Mr. Shirley was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dianne Shirley, and by his infant son, Joseph Logan Shirley.
