Smithfield – Douglas "Doug" Byrd, age 80, passed away Sunday January 7, 2024 at his home in Smithfield. He was born in Johnston County on March 3, 1943 to the late Henry Clay Byrd and Florence Thompson Byrd. In addition to his father and mother, he is also preceded in death by wife, Sue Byrd; brothers, Velton Byrd, Thel Byrd, Hugh Byrd, Henry Byrd Jr., Lynn Byrd; sister, Beatrice Byrd.

The family will receive visitors in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home on Thursday January 11, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be conducted in Pisgah Baptist Church in Smithfield on Friday January 12, 2024 at 11:00 AM officiated by Brian Beasley. Burial will follow the service on Friday in the church cemetery.

He is survived by son, Lee Byrd, and wife Lynn; daughter, Joann Norris, and husband Donald; grandchildren, Donnie Norris, Hunter Byrd, Kaylee Byrd, and Ally Byrd; brother, Otis Byrd, and wife Teresa; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; dog, Bubba; cat, Bo.

Mr. Doug was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Smithfield and served as a deacon, Sunday school director, member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, and numerous committees and jobs for the church. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed growing vegetables and crops, cutting grass, talking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
