Smithfield – Doris Jones Lempe, age 76, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at her home. Born August 7, 1939 in Johnston County she was a daughter of the late Major and Ethel Lee Jones. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Jones. Doris attended Strayer Junior College in Washington, D.C. She loved competing in pageants throughout the United States. Doris was crowned Miss Smithfield 1959 and Miss District of Columbia USA in 1960 and was also a contestant in the Miss North Carolina pageant in 1959 and Miss Universe pageant in 1961.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016 in Knollwood Memorial Park with Pastor Eric Vernelson officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.
Surviving are her son, Fred Lempe of Smithfield; sister, Shirley Barbee of Smithfield; grandson, Freddie Lempe; and many nieces and nephews.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Parrish Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
