Derwood Massengill, age 72, died Wednesday evening at his home.  Born October 3, 1951 in Johnston County to the late Rossie and Gladys Messer Massengill, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronnie Massengill, Raymond Massengill and Ray Massengill.  As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with the Rev. Davie Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in the Parker Family Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service.

Surviving are his sons, Wayne Adams of Smithfield and Derwood "D.J." Massengill of Benson; mother of his sons, Jeanette Adams of Selma; brother, Rossie Massengill, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Pine Level; sister, Betty Jean Massengill of Clayton; grandchildren, Hunter Adams, Gabby Adams, Charity Messer, Makayla Adams, Tyler Massengill and wife, Monica and Elizabeth Massengill; great grandchildren, Paisley Adams, Madelyn Adams, Brooke Massengill and Taylanie Massengill.
