Charlie Hicks Barefoot, age 78, passed away Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by family.  Born March 4, 1946, in Johnston County, he was the son of Louester J. Thornton.  His sister, Frankie Barnes, still resides in Johnston County.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Debbie Barefoot; daughters, Cheryl and Sandy (Angus); son, Chris (Denise).  Grandchildren; Ashley, Alyssa, Cayden and Chase; and one great-grandchild, Everleigh.

Charlie enlisted in the Army in June of 1964.  His service lasted 4 years, during which he served proudly as a Communications Specialist in Vietnam.   After discharge in 1968, Charlie worked at Sylvania while attending Johnston Community College.  His career shifted to Universal Leaf Tobacco, where he rose to the position of Plant Manager at K.R. Edwards in Smithfield.  After retirement, Charlie delivered mail for the USPS in Clayton.

During his younger years, Charlie enjoyed time on the golf course.  He was commonly found working in the yard, playing sports with his children or tennis with neighbors.  He often refereed local sporting events.

Later in life, he was content with watching NC State basketball and football from the comfort of his living room, along with watching the Yankees chase a pennant.   He enjoyed reminiscing through YouTube videos of areas he visited around the world during his enlistment and sharing his experiences.
