Barefoot
January 16, 1938 – October 11, 2025
Charles Jerry Barefoot, age 87, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Wake Med Raleigh Hospital. Jerry was born on January 16, 1938, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late William Purdie Barefoot and Lila Mae Barefoot.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brothers Billy Barefoot, Thomas Barefoot, and wife Mildred; sister, Mildred Beard and husband Emmett, brother-in-law, Dennis Wheeler, and sister-in-law, Betty Wheeler.
He is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 62 years, Joanne Wheeler Barefoot. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Roberta Barefoot; brother-in-law, Ray Wheeler and wife, Mozelle; and sister-in-law, Doris Wheeler. He also left behind numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many special lifelong friends.
Jerry worked for Carolina Telephone most of his life, first in Fayetteville, then later in Smithfield, before retiring. He and Joanne then started their own small telephone installation business. Jerry also spent several years in the National Guard in service to our country. He also enjoyed farming in his spare time.
Jerry was a loving and good husband to Joanne. After their marriage, they lived in Smithfield before later buying a farm outside of Selma. He was a great brother and uncle to all his family. Many nieces and nephews have remembered how he always had time to play with them. He was an avid sports fan with football being his favorite. He enjoyed cheering on his beloved Wolfpack and Redskins teams. He was a lot of fun and was always ready for a good meal. He and Joanne enjoyed many outings with the Antioch Baptist Church Seniors Group. Jerry was a jack of all trades and was able to fix about anything around the farm or the house.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Parrish Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Micro Memorial Gardens.
