Carol Dufour
Hewitt
November 25, 1944 – March 24, 2025
Carol DuFour Hewitt passed away peacefully in Smithfield, NC on March 24, 2025. She recently celebrated her 80th birthday, making her the longest living member of her family.
She was the daughter of the late Kenneth and June Varney DuFour of Sanford, NC.
She was born in Glens Falls, New York on November 25, 1944. She always shared fond memories of her childhood in Upstate New York. She loved an adventure and began moving South in the late 70s.
Her life took her and her daughters to states such as New Jersey and Virgina and she eventually arrived in the Carolinas in the summer of 1984. She lived in SC for about 2 decades, eventually making her way to Smithfield, NC where she lived out the remainder of her days. Everywhere she went she spread her beautiful light and brought joy to her community.
Carol was a faithful Christian and found her final Church Home at First Baptist Church in Smithfield, NC. She represented her church community and her devotion to Christ through two missions to help clean up after hurricane Katrina. During this time she grew closer to her life in Christ and gained deep, everlasting friendships.
She retired from Liberty Life Insurance Company in SC after 20 years of service. She continued to work at many different places after retirement up until the last year of her life. Her final occupation was as the hostess at SodoSopa restaurant in Smithfield. She was adored by all and assumed the humble identity of, "Grandma."
She loved her puppies, Lady Bug and Coco as if they were her own children. Everywhere she went, whether it was around her block or shopping at Dewayne's, her puppies were strolling with her. Carol was a strong, independent, spicy and colorful lady with impeccable taste and style. Even her puppies were always dressed to the nines. Our memory of her is as beautiful and vibrant as her favorite color: Pink.
She is survived by daughters Lisa Koncikowski of Greenville, SC, and Tracey O'Dowd and husband Michael O'Dowd, Jr. of Smithfield, NC; grandchildren Ian Milks of Greenville, SC, Hannah Milks of Greenville, SC, and Andrew Milks of Seattle, WA; niece Lynn Juckett Hooker and husband Brandon Hooker. And of course, Coco Pup of Smithfield, NC.
The family extends deep gratitude and admiration for the amazing team of people who cared for Carol in her final months.
Carol was given loving care and support by her in-home Care Team: Angela, Angell, Raven, Samantha, and Donesia. In her final days, she received the blessed comfort of the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. From the moment she arrived, Carol and her family were honored, respected and cared for with grace and dignity. The family invites you to join them in contributing to the SECU Hospice House's continued support of families in their most difficult times. Please donate by visiting the Johnston Health Foundation website or by mailing a check to Johnston Health Foundation, P.O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.
Carol's love, light, and laughter will be deeply missed and cherished by all who knew her. Her eternal Spirit will forever live through those who loved her and were loved by her.
A celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church in Smithfield on April 12, 2025 with visitation beginning at 12 noon and a memorial service at 1 pm. Following the church service, a reception for family/friends will be held at SoDoSoPa, 146 S. Third St., Smithfield, NC. In honor of her favorite color, we invite everyone to wear a touch of Pink as we come together to remember and uplift the loving energy she shared with the world.
