Smithfield--Thomas H. Carpenter, 87, of S. Second St. passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Thomas, or Tommy as he was known, was born on January 11, 1925 in Wake County, son of the late Don and Novella Penny Carpenter. Tommy was a funeral director with Underwood Funeral Home for over 50 years, until declining health forced his retirement. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a medic in the US Army, and he was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was also a charter member of the local Civitan Club and the Johnston County Rescue Department.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Riverside Cemetery. Reverend Lee Colbert and Mr. Luby Tyner will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
Surviving is his loving sister, Mabel Carpenter, who tirelessly cared for Tommy during his illness, and a host of friends around this community who will miss his smile and his wit.
